ALERT: First NEW Range Rover in a decade!

First picture released of the new Range Rover Velar.

Designed to slot in between the Evoque and the Sport, Land Rover has a new baby on the way, and like most new cars in todays day, it's got a bizarre name.

Range Rover Velar

This time next week Land Rover will release full details of the Velar, but from the teaser and information we have gathered, we know it's designed to slot nicely between our best selling vehicle from last year - The Evoque, and the slightly larger Range Rover Sport.

Rumors are afoot that the velar has been based on Jaguars fastest selling vehicle in it's history, the F-Pace.

According to voices from Land Rover, this vehicle "Changes Everything", but from what we can gather, the Utility Vehicle will fit in alongside it's competitors with a coupe-like rear end. It's a brave move from Land Rover, competing in a crowded market with other crossovers such as the Porsche Macan, Mercedes GLC Coupe and the BMW X4.

Land Rover also says the car takes a "visually reductive" approach. That shouldn't be too hard, because Range Rover interiors are generally pretty simple, with lots of straight, clean lines, something I quite enjoy.

The name Velar comes from Land Rover's original Range Rover prototypes and is derived from the Latin velaris, which means "to veil or cover." That makes sense for a prototype that's supposed to be under wraps, but on a production model, it sounds all exotic and mysterious.

On March 1st, Land Rover will officially release this vehicle, and with the Geneva Motor Show coming up, it's time to ask my boss if I'll be needing my passport!
