Blog: Electric Vehicles Worse for the Climate Than ICE Cars?

Let’s Set the Record Straight

A common misconception is that electric vehicles (EVs) are worse for the environment than ICE cars because of emissions from power plants that generate electricity. However, the facts tell a different story. Even when factoring in the emissions from electricity production, EVs typically have a smaller carbon footprint than traditional petrol/diesel vehicles—and their superior efficiency makes them a more sustainable choice.

 

One of the biggest advantages of EVs is that they produce no tailpipe emissions. Unlike ICE cars, EVs don’t emit carbon pollution while being driven. While generating electricity for charging does produce greenhouse gases (GHGs), the total emissions depend on the energy mix in your region. Areas that rely on renewable energy sources like wind or solar have significantly lower emissions associated with EVs.

Even in regions where electricity generation includes fossil fuels like coal or natural gas, research consistently shows that EVs still produce fewer emissions over their lifetime than the average ICE car. As more renewable energy is incorporated into the energy grid, the emissions associated with charging EVs will continue to decline, making them an even greener choice.

 

A key advantage of EVs is their exceptional energy efficiency. EVs use approximately 87%–91% of the energy stored in their batteries to power the vehicle, thanks to advanced systems like regenerative braking. In comparison, ICE vehicles convert only 16%–25% of the energy in fuel into movement. This vast efficiency gap means EVs require significantly less energy to travel the same distance as a ICE car, reducing their overall environmental impact.

 

Electric vehicles represent a critical step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. With no direct emissions, exceptional energy efficiency, and an energy grid that is increasingly powered by renewables, EVs are a clear improvement over traditional ICE cars when it comes to their environmental impact. As technology and infrastructure continue to evolve, EVs will only become a more sustainable and essential part of the transportation landscape.
